There is a staggering amount of abbreviations in midwifery. So this list is for midwifery students, other healthcare students and mums to be trying to interpret their medical notes. Here is a list of abbreviations you will come across on maternity wards.

SROM: spontaneous rupture of membranes

PROM: prolonged rupture of membranes

P-PROM: preterm- prolonged rupture of membranes (before 37 weeks gestation)

NAD: no abnormalities detected

PV: per vaginal

PR: per rectum

NKDA: no known drug allergies

ARM: artificial rupture of membranes

EBL: estimated blood loss

FSE: fetal scalp electrode

PPH: postpartum haemorrhage

MOH: major obstetric haemorrhage

LSCS: lower segment caesarean section

PET: pre-eclamptic toxaemia

FH: fetal heart

FM: fetal movements

RFM: reduced fetal movements

FMF: fetal movements felt

LMP: last menstrual period
